Self-Abdominal Massage

Abdominal or colon massage can assist with reducing gas and constipation pain. This technique can stimulate the normal muscle contractions of the colon, helping to soften and move stool along the gut. It is most beneficial when performed after eating but can be done any time of the day.

CAUTION: Do not perform unless cleared by your physician if recent abdominal surgery, pregnancy, unstable spinal injuries, hernia, or tumors.

How to massage:

  • Lie down in a comfortable position.
  • Start in the lower right corner of the abdomen in the space between your belly button and pelvic hip bone.  Gently press down into the abdomen with fingertips stacked and scoop upwards. Increase to deeper pressure as tolerated. Repeat 5-10 times.
  • Repeat on the left side gently pressing downwards. Repeat 5-10 times.
