Tongue Press Exercise

These exercises help strengthen the muscles in the tongue to improve swallowing. You may have to work up to completing a full set of the exercises. Your speech-language pathologist (SLP) will help guide you.

For each exercise:  Repeat 5-10 times, for 3-5 sets total.  Allow 1 minute of rest between sets.

Exercise 1:

  • With the tip of your tongue, find the bump right behind your top front teeth as if you are making the “D” sound. Press firmly and hold for 10 seconds.

Exercise 2:

  • Press the back of your tongue towards the roof of your mouth as if you are saying the “K” or “ng” sound. Press firmly and hold for 10 seconds.
