Discharge Instructions 

Internalization of Nephrostomy Stents

 

Please follow these post-procedure instructions:

 

POST-PROCEDURE ACTIVITY:

  • A responsible adult must drive you home.  You should not drive, operate heavy machinery or do anything that requires concentration for at least 24 hours after receiving sedation or anesthesia.

  • It is recommended that a responsible adult be with you until morning.

  • Do not lift more than 5 lbs. for one week; also avoid pushing, pulling or straining. 

POST-PROCEDURE SITE CARE:

  • You will have a small bandage over the site.  Keep this dry.  You may remove it in 24 hours.  In some cases, you may have some leakage of urine at this site until it is fully closed.  If this occurs, place clean gauze over the site to absorb the urine.  Change the gauze frequently as it becomes wet to avoid skin irritation. 

  • You may shower in 24 hours after removing the bandage; you may also remove the bandage during your shower.  Do not leave the bandage in place if it becomes wet.  Change it as often as needed to keep the surrounding skin dry.

  • Do not submerge the site underwater for one week or until fully healed (no swimming, hot tub, etc.)

  • Do not use ointments, creams or powders on the puncture site unless directed by your doctor. 

DIET/MEDICATIONS:

  • You may resume your previous diet after the procedure.

  • Avoid any food or beverages containing alcohol for at least 24 hours after receiving sedation or anesthesia.

  • Please see the Medication reconciliation sheet for instructions regarding resuming your home medications. 

WHEN TO CALL THE DOCTOR:

  • Bright red blood has soaked the bandage or you have frank blood in your urine.  You may have some blood in your urine but it should be minimal and your urine should gradually become clear.

  • You have severe pain not relieved by medication.  Some soreness at the site is to be expected. 

  • You have chills, body aches, fever greater than 101⁰F.

  • You have redness, swelling or warmth at the site.

  • You have red streaks leading from the site.

  • There is purulent or pus-like drainage from the site. 

  

Call 911 for excessive bleeding, dizziness/fainting, chest pain or shortness of breath.
