Use of the CAM walker boot

Purpose:

  • Your provider has prescribed a CAM walker boot to support your foot or ankle during the healing process.

Wearing Schedule:

  • Follow your provider’s instructions for your specific wearing schedule

How to Apply:

  • When re-applying the CAM walker, place your foot securely into the boot.
  • Make sure your heel is touching the back of the boot and touches the inside of the boot's flat bottom as much as you are able.  The foot should sit in a neutral position.
  • Adjust the straps snugly but not too tight.

Using the Pump:  (DO NOT use if you have a loss of sensation or neuropathy)

  • The pump is used to snug the boot to what is comfortable for you.  Use the pump after you have fastened the straps.
  • You may need to release the air before re-applying the boot.

Cleaning:

  • Wearing a sock is recommended to help keep the liner clean

If the CAM walker becomes soiled

  • Hand wash in cold water
  • Rinse well
  • Air dry

What to watch for:

  • Red areas
  • Development of a sore or abrasion
  • Increased pain
  • Swelling
  • Numbness or tingling

If you develop any of these symptoms, elevate your foot, loosen straps and check the skin.  If symptoms persist contact your provider.

Safety with use:

  • Driving with a CAM walker boot is not safe and not recommended.
  • Follow your provider’s instructions for putting weight through the boot.  Use crutches, a walker or knee scooter if instructed.
  • The heel height on the CAM walker boot is tall. Wearing a thick soled shoe on the other foot that is nearly the same height, like a tennis shoe, sneaker, or boot, will help your balance and reduce strain on the back and hip.
  • Use a handrail when climbing stairs
