Instructions For Your Scheduled Induction Of Labor

Prior to your induction:

  1. You may have a light meal before you arrive for your induction. An example of light meal includes toast or crackers with jam. Avoid fatty foods such as peanut butter, fried eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. While in labor you will be allowed to have clear liquids. This may change based on your risk factors.
  2. Remove all jewelry, including body jewelry and piercings and fingernail polish prior to arrival.
  3. Please DO NOT bring any of your baby’s belongings (car seat, diaper bag, clothing, etc.) to Labor and Delivery. It will not be needed until you have moved to Mother/Baby.
  4. If you bring children under the age of 12 into the labor room, there must be a designated adult to watch them. Please make sure this designated adult is not your primary support person, and will be able to stay with the child in case of an emergency.

 

Day of Induction:

  1. Take a shower prior to your arrival for induction of labor.
  2. Go to Labor and Delivery (Unit 54) on the 5th floor of the main hospital. Check in with the security desk. Tell them your name and that you are here for an induction of labor.
  3. All visitors over the age of 16 must have photo identification. You will be taken to a room where your nurse will start an IV and draw blood. Consents and paperwork will be signed at this time.
  4. The labor and delivery doctors will talk with you about starting your labor and contractions. An anesthesiologist will talk with you about different ways to help with pain control. An epidural or IV pain medications are available in most cases.
  5. Inductions may take several hours to several days depending upon your situation and the method used.
  6. Upon delivery, there may be additional staff present in the room to care for your baby.
  7. If there is an emergency with you or the baby the support persons may be asked to step out of the room but will be updated by staff frequently.
  8. Videotaping is not allowed during your hospital stay. 

 

After Your Baby is Born:

  1. After your baby is born, you will be in recovery for two hours. Please check with your nurse for visitor policies at this time. Once you are moved to the Mother/Baby unit, you may have as many visitors as you like, and of any age. Visitation restrictions may apply during flu season. 
  2. Plan on staying in the hospital from 1-3 days after your delivery.
  3. We encourage rooming-in, which means your baby stays with mom at all times if possible.
  4. Please have your support person bring your car seat up to the unit shortly after you are transferred to the Mother/Baby unit.
