Managing C. difficile in the Hospital

This material will help you understand what to expect when you are diagnosed with C. difficile (C.diff) in the hospital.

How C. diff spreads

C. diff is spread through stool.  Any surface that has been in contact with stool can spread c. diff.  A common way that it spreads is from unwashed hands or unclean shared items.

Safety precautions while in the hospital

  • Hospital staff will clean their hands before entering your room and wash with soap and water after caring for you.  Do not be afraid to ask them to clean their hands.
  • Hospital staff will wear a gown and gloves while in your room.
  • Your room will be cleaned with bleach wipes twice a day by your nurse.
  • A housekeeper will clean your room every day.
  • Food that is brought into your room cannot be taken back out to be reheated or stored in the refrigerator.

If your Healthcare Provider says you can walk outside your hospital room:

  • First wash your hands with soap and water
  • Then put on a new patient gown and socks

How visitors can prevent the spread of C. diff:

  • Have visitors clean their hands with gel sanitizer or soap and water before entering your room.
  • Have visitors wash their hands with soap and water only when leaving your room.

Practice good handwashing

  • Use warm water and plenty of soap. Rub your hands together well.
  • Clean your whole hand. Wash under nails, between fingers, and up your wrists.
  • Wash for at least 20 seconds (or sing “Happy Birthday” twice).
  • Rinse. Let the water run down your fingers, not up your wrists.
  • Dry your hands well. Then use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the door.
