Botox® Abdominal Injections

You are having injections of Botulinum Toxin A (Botox®) in your abdominal wall to relax the muscles in preparation for hernia surgery.  This will allow the surgeon to repair your hernia without applying unnecessary tension to these muscles.   

POST-PROCEDURE ACTIVITY:

  • Do not exercise for 24 hours

POST-PROCEDURE SITE CARE:

  • Keep bandages and procedure area clean and dry for 24 hours.
  • You may apply ice for 20 minutes as needed for discomfort.
  • Do not submerge the site underwater (no tub bath, swimming, hot tub, etc.) for 3 days after your procedure.
  • Do not use ointments, creams or powders on the puncture site.

DIET/MEDICATIONS:

  • You may resume your previous diet after the procedure. 
  • Continue to take your prescribed medications.

WHEN TO CALL THE DOCTOR:

  • You may notice superficial bruising at the injection sites, a bloating sensation, weak coughing or back pain.
  • You have signs of infection such as
    • Redness, swelling or warmth at puncture site
    • Chills, body aches, fever greater than 101⁰F

 

You or your caregiver should call 911 for any severe bleeding, dizziness, shortness of breath or loss of consciousness.
