Information for Families of ICU Patients
When someone is in the ICU, it is a stressful time for both the patient and family. Below find helpful tips for interacting with your loved one while they are in the ICU.
If they are not able to talk to you or may not seem awake:
- Don’t talk about them in their presence. They may understand more than we know.
- Talk to them and call them by name.
- Talk about familiar things, people, and events.
- Don’t shout. If your loved one does not have hearing problems, it is not necessary to use a louder voice.
- Touch your loved one. Hold their hand, wipe their face with a washcloth, comb their hair, apply lotion as appropriate. But always check with staff before touching or moving them.
If they are more awake and alert:
- Make eye contact.
- Be sure to get their attention.
- Speak in a calm and slow manner. (Don’t shout) Say one thing at a time.
- Bring eyeglasses and hearing aids
- Provide information to help keep them oriented:
- Where they are
- The time and day
- Why they are in the hospital
- Ask yes/no questions. Wait for a response. They may need more time to respond. Repeat questions as needed.
- Give positive feedback and encouragement.
- Allow plenty of rest time. Rest is important for healing.
- If they are confused or agitated, it may also be beneficial to reduce stimulation. Turn off the TV or radio, only play softly on occasion. Limit side conversations in the room. Limit visitors to 1 or 2 at a time.
Be sure to take care of yourself. This is a stressful situation. Eat regularly and rest when you can. Go for a walk outside for fresh air.
Provide information about your loved one to family and friends through a group email, text or make one person the contact so you are not answering everyone’s questions.
If you become tired or ill, you won’t be able to care for your loved one. If you feel like you need to talk with a professional, Chaplin Services or Social Work are available to talk or provide resources for you.
