INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR SCHEDULED INDUCTION OF LABOR 

AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS HOSPITAL 

Your induction of labor is scheduled on_______________________ at ___________________.

The date and time of your induction may change if Labor and Delivery is very busy, and it is not safe to start your induction at that time. A Labor and Delivery nurse will call you to reschedule your induction if it is necessary to keep you safe.
 

Before your Induction:

  1. You may eat a light meal before you arrive for your induction. An example of a light meal includes toast or crackers with jam. Avoid fatty foods such as peanut butter, fried eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. 

  2. Remove all jewelry, including body jewelry and piercings. Leave your jewelry at home.

  3. Please remove fingernail polish before arrival.

  4. Do not bring baby items to Labor and Delivery. Bring these items when you and our baby move to Unit 56 (Postpartum Unit).

  5. We acknowledge, admire, and respect the diversity of our patients, their families, and their lived experiences. We are committed to providing our patients with the best care possible and we know that having a diverse team of health care providers is an important part of that mission. We hope that you will respect the diversity of your care team as we work to respect the diversity of our patients. If there are extreme circumstances that mean you cannot receive care from a member of our team, based on gender for example, we encourage you to discuss these issues with your provider before your admission to labor and delivery. Day of Induction:

  1. Take a shower before coming to the hospital.

  2. Please go to Labor & Delivery on the 5th floor of The University of Kansas Hospital.  See the map below.  

  3. Check in at the Labor & Delivery's front desk.  A staff member will take you to your room.

  4. Visitor information:

    • You are allowed 2 to 5 visitors at a time during your hospital stay.

    • Children under the age of 12 must have an adult with them who can take them out of the room if necessary.

    • All visitors over the age of 16 must have photo identification.

    • If there is a change in our visiting policy, we will share that with you.

  5. Once you are in your room, the nurse/provier will

    • Start an IV

    • Draw routine blook work

    • Obtain consents and complete paperwork

  6. The provider will talk with you about labor induction and pain control.

  7. Our hospital is a teaching facility, which means we are deeply committed to educating tomorrow’s health care professionals. Therefore, residents will be involved in your care. A resident is a physician who has finished medical school and is receiving training in a specialized area, such as surgery, OB/GYN, or internal medicine. All our doctors are engaged in the supervision and training of resident physicians and feel that it enhances the experience and safety of the care that you receive. 

    • Medical students also help in the care of our patients on Labor & Delivery.  Medical students on Labor and Delivery  have typically completed two to three years of medical school.

  8. It is normal for labor inductions may last hours or even a few days. Our team will be monitoring you and your baby at all times.

  9. At delivery, you will have a team of nurses and providers to care for you. 

  10. Your baby will have a different team of nurses and providers providing care at delivery.

  11. If there is an emergency with you or your baby, your support person may be asked to step out of the room. They will be updated by staff frequently.

  12. Videotaping is not allowed during your hospital stay.

After your Baby is Born: 

  1. You will recover on the Labor & Delivery Unit for several hours.  After recovery, you will be moved to Unit 56 (Postpartum unit).

  2. Visitors will be allowed based on current hospital visitor guidelines. There may be some limits to visitation.

  3. Plan to stay in the hospital from 1 to 3 days after your delivery.

  4. Your baby will stay in your hospital room with you throughout your stay unless they need special care.

  5. Lactation consultants will see you after the baby is born, usuallydaily.  They are available any time you request help with breastfeeding.

  6. Your support person should bring baby’s car seat to Unit 56 (Postpartum)
