Consults Before Your Surgery 
Large and Small Bowel Surgery


YOU WILL SEE THE FOLLOWING CONSULTS, IF CHECKED:

_____ Pre-Anesthesia Testing Clinic (PAT)/Pre-operative Assessment Clinic (PAC)

  • This appointment is required to prepare you for surgery

  • You will meet with a nurse, a pharmacist, and possibly a member of the anesthesia team

  • Your past medical history and current medications will be reviewed. 

  • Some tests may be done to check your heart, lungs and blood.

 

_____ Patient to-do list:

  • Bring with you your primary care doctor and cardiologist’s name and contact information (if applicable).

  • Bring a complete list of your medications, vitamins and herbal supplements, including their dosages and instructions. Bring the name and phone number of your pharmacy. The pharmacist will provide you with medications instructions prior to surgery.

_____ Cardiology

  • The cardiologist will examine you, discuss your history and review your medications. Based on this exam, the cardiologist will determine if any additional testing is needed and will let your colorectal surgeon know of any concerns or risk factors that may need special attention.

  • If the cardiologist determines additional testing is needed, additional appointments will be made.o There will be many opportunities for you to ask the cardiology team to explain any ordered testing as well as answer any questions you might have.

 

_____ Patient to-do list: 

  • Bring a complete list of your medications, vitamins and herbal supplements, including their dosages and instructions.

 

_____ Radiology: 

  • Interventional Radiology (IR) uses X-rays, CT (Cat Scan) or ultrasound guidance to maneuver devices into the area of interest, frequently eliminating the need for hospitalization or invasive surgery.

 

_____ Patient to-do list: 

  • Please follow any instructions given by our department or your physician’s office to prepare for your exam. If you have questions, please call the IR department.

  • Be prepared to provide any previous patient history to the technologist, radiologist, nurse or radiology assistant. This includes surgical history and a listing of current medications.

  • Please let the technologist, nurse or radiologist know if you have any allergies to iodine contrast (dye).

  • Please let the staff know if you are currently taking any blood thinner medication, including aspirin.

_____ Endoscopy/GI Lab 

  • This appointment is required to prepare you for surgery

  • At this appointment, your specific procedure will be explained to you by the Endoscopy nurses and doctors.  They will answer any questions you may have.

_____ Patient to-do list:

  • Ensure you arrange to have someone drive you safely home following the procedure.
