T-Transfers

A T-transfer may be the safest way to transfer if you are unable to put weight on both legs.

1. Position the wheelchair close to the bed.

  • Swing the leg rests away or remove them completely. Use the latch on the inside of the leg rest underneath the seat.
  • To remove the leg rest, lift the leg rest up from the pegs on the outer side of the frame.

2. Have a helper position the front of your chair to face the side of the bed until it touches.

3. Make sure there is no space between the bed and the chair. Lock the brakes.

4. Using both arms, sit up and scoot your hips toward the chair until you are sideways on the bed. Scoot your hips against the edge of the bed touching the chair.

5. Keep your legs resting on the bed so they slide across the bed as you move. Do not press your heel/foot into the bed.

  • If needed, your helper can hold your legs.

6. While your helper holds the chair still, scoot your hips onto the chair using your arms.

7. Position legs on leg rests.

  • If the leg rests were completely removed, reattach them onto the pegs on the sides.
  • Have your helper support your legs in an elevated position while you swing your leg rests into place.
  • Swing the leg rests in front of you until you hear them click and they are stable to support your legs.

8. To return to bed, reverse the steps above.

  • Remove leg rests as you near the edge of the bed.
  • Have your helper lift your legs onto the bed as you wheel the chair up to the bed until it touches. Lock your brakes.
  • Use your arms to scoot your hips onto the bed. Your helper may support your legs if needed.
