HeartMate 3 Care and Maintenance

Care and Maintenance

For Batteries, Battery Charger and Mobile Power Unit (MPU)

Caring for HeartMate Batteries & Battery Charger

  • (Weekly) Clean the metal battery contacts and the interior contacts of battery clips.
  • Use a cotton swab or lint-free cloth that has been moistened (not dripping) with rubbing alcohol.
  • Allow the alcohol to dry before using newly cleaned batteries or clips.
  • Do not clean batteries while the batteries are in use.

  • (Monthly) Unplug the Battery Charger and clean the metal contacts inside all four charging pockets.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or swab that has been moistened (not dripping) with rubbing alcohol.
  • Allow the alcohol to air dry before inserting batteries into the pockets.
  • Do not clean the Battery Charger while it is plugged in.

  • (Annually) Battery Charger must be inspected and cleaned by the hospital’s Biomedical Engineer.
  • Your VAD Coordinator will remind you to bring in the Battery Charger for this preventive maintenance.
  • The safety inspection and cleaning include functional testing and inspection.

Caring for the Mobile Power Unit  (MPU)

  • Every six months, replace the Mobile Power Unit batteries with three new AA Alkaline batteries.
  • If corrosion observed, discontinue use of the MPU and call your hospital contact.

  • Lay the ribbon on the bottom of the compartment. Place (new) Alkaline AA batteries in the battery compartment.
  • Orient the batteries as shown on the orientation markings on the battery.
  • Replace the battery compartment cover. Use the flathead screwdriver or coin to tighten the screw
  • Always connect to the Mobile Power Unit when sleeping, or when there is a chance of sleep.
  • If there is a power failure, transfer from the MPU to another power source.
  • The backup battery in the System Controller will briefly power the pump while transferring to battery power.
  • High levels of static current may damage or harm the system and may cause your pump to stop.
  • While awake, you should use battery power instead of the Mobile Power Unit to power the system.
  • Using battery power can reduce the risk of system damage from high levels of static current.
