MIRALAX and GATORADE PREP for Procedure 

 

To reduce the risk of bleeding, please stop blood thinners such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Plavix, Aleve, and Naproxen 7 days before the test.  Stop Coumadin 5 days before the test.  Lovenox injections may be taken as usual through the day before the test.  Do NOT give yourself a Lovenox injection the morning of the test.  If any of these medicines have been ordered by your doctor, you must check with the doctor to make sure it is okay to stop them.

Shopping List: Purchase the following supplies a day or two before the prep

  1. Gatorade (or other clear fluid, gingerale, sprite), 64 ounces

  2. Miralax Powder 255 grams

  3. Magnesium Citrate (do not take if you have renal failure)

  4. Dulcolax tablets (over the counter at the Pharmacy). 

The day before the procedure:

  1. The day before the procedure, beginning with your first meal of the day, drink a clear liquid diet only:  DO NOT EAT ANY SOLID or CREAMED FOODS.

  2. Clear liquids include:
    Coffee (no creamers or milk), tea, broth, bouillon, flavored drinks, Gatorade, water, juices
    *DO NOT CONSUME ANY FOOD OR DRINK THAT IS RED, ORANGE, OR PURPLE IN COLOR*

  3. At 12 noon on the day before your procedure, drink the Magnesium Citrate.

  4. At 3 PM on the day before your procedure, take all 4 Dulcolax by mouth.

  5. At 5 PM mix the Miralax with the Gatorade.

  6. Try to finish drinking the Gatorade mixture in about 2 hours- an 8oz glass every ten minutes.  If you need more time, take it.
     
    Continue to drink lots of clear liquids, (NO SOLID FOOD or CREAMED LIQUIDS) until midnight to stay well hydrated and protect your kidneys.  Your urine should be light yellow.  If your urine becomes dark yellow you are not drinking enough.

 

      7.    Nothing by mouth after midnight before your procedure.

In addition to the bowel prep, you will be required to take a series of antibiotics.  

  1. At 1 p.m.: Take Neomycin (1 gram) and Metronidazole (1 gram)

  2. At 3 p.m.: Take Neomycin (1 gram) and Metronidazole (1 gram)

  3. At 11 p.m.: Take Neomycin (1 gram) and Metronidazole (1 gram) 

The antibiotic will be called into the pharmacy of your choice.  Please call if you have any questions or concerns.
