How to Put On a Gait Belt

A gait belt is a device that can be used to assist with standing, transfers, or when walking. It is used to keep both you and your loved one safe during mobility.

Steps to putting on a gait belt:

  • While your loved one is sitting, wrap the belt just above their waist (unless otherwise directed by your therapist). The buckle should be in the front. Make sure the teeth of the belt are towards the middle.

  • Thread the tip of the belt through the buckle making sure the teeth portion grasp the belt tightly.

  • Bring the tip of the belt across the teeth portion and slip it through the other side.

  • The belt should be snug, but comfortable. You should be able to get your fingers underneath the belt.

  • If there is excess strap, tuck it under the belt.

  • The belt may loosen when the person stands up, so be sure to make it snug again before further activity.

  • Always hold the belt from its underside- meaning your fingers are pointing upwards.
