 Slideboard Transfers

1. Remove or swing away the arm and leg rests closest to the bed.  Position the wheelchair as close as possible next to the bed. Lock the brakes.

2. Place your feet on the floor and positioned slightly behind your knees.

3. Lean away from the bed and carefully slide the board under your thigh.  Place the other end of the board on the bed at a 45-degree angle.

4. Without placing your fingers under the board, lean forward and away from the bed.  Slide yourself across the board.

*Do not lean backwards during the transfer.  Leaning backwards can push your hips forward and off the board.

5. Once you are safely sitting on the bed, lean away from the slide board and remove it.

  Tips for slideboard transfers:

  • Remember when you are removing wheelchair parts (arm rests and leg rests) to place them where you will be able to easily reach them later (i.e. not on the floor).
  • A slide board transfer can be more difficult with bare buttocks (such as after using commode and/or shower bench) and when your body is wet. Place a pillowcase or towel on the board to help you slide.
  • It is best to have surfaces of similar heights (bed, wheelchair seat, commode), if this is something that can be arranged prior to transferring. It is possible to transfer at an incline, but this requires more strength and balance.
  • Keep your body in the correct position throughout the transfer. If needed, stop and reposition your legs so that your feet remain flat on the floor throughout the transfer.
  • While performing the transfer, always lean forward and away from your destination to reduce pressure on the hip you are attempting to move.
  • When transferring, never put your hands or fingers under the board as they could become pinched or stuck.  Instead try making your hands into fists to help you push.
